Performance management is about managing, motivating and measuring people’s performance to achieve goals and objectives in alignment with the strategy of the organization. It is about getting the best out of people and helping them do a great job. This happens through an effective performance management system which balances fairness and accountability. Performance management systems must be in alignment with the organizational goals and overall strategic direction. When the strategy changes, the way performance is managed also has to change, to ensure people are being managed, motivated, measured and rewarded on the relevant behaviours. When the performance management system lags behind strategic change in the organization, it is very difficult to get people aligned to the new changes.
